Affan Irfan, M.D.
Non-Invasive Cardiology 

Irfan is a fellowship-trained, board-certified cardiologist who specializes in non-invasive cardiology. After earning his medical degree from Aga Khan University in Karachi, Pakistan, Irfan completed an internal medicine residency at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, in Champaign, Illinois, followed by a general cardiology fellowship at the University of Louisville in Louisville, Kentucky. He is also currently completing a Ph.D. in physiology from the University of Louisville. Irfan is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Paul Okhumale, M.D.
Electrophysiology 

Okhumale is a fellowship-trained, board-certified electrophysiologist, which means he tests, diagnoses and treats patients with abnormal heart rhythms and conditions such as atrial fibrillation, bradycardia, tachycardia and more. He earned his medical degree from Windsor University in St. Kitts. He completed his residency in internal medicine at East Carolina University/Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville, North Carolina, followed by fellowships in cardiology at Marshall University and electrophysiology at Advocate Illinois Masonic Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Dentistry & Oral Surgery

Malav B. Shah, DDS
General Dentistry

Shah specializes in general dentistry for all ages.

He earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery from West Virginia University in Morgantown, W.Va. Shah was one of two dentists selected in 2016 for the inaugural cohort of a one-year general practice residency at Marshall University, in partnership with Cabell Huntington Hospital. A dental residency is not required to practice general dentistry. However, this intensive, 12-month program trains general dentists in management of medically complex situations and special needs patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings while allowing residents to gain valuable experience in all aspects of general dentistry.

Family Medicine

Randall W. Peterson, M.D.
Primary Care

Peterson has been in private practice in Putnam County since 1984, when he opened Putnam Family Practice Associates. Over the years, he has held various roles at the former Putnam General Hospital, now CAMC-Teays Valley Hospital, including medical director, board of directors member, president/vice-president of medical staff and chairman of the department of medicine. He earned his medical degree from West Virginia University in Morgantown, West Virginia, and completed a family practice residency at the University of South Florida in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Robert B. Walker, M.D.
Geriatrics

Walker rejoins Marshall Family Medicine after nearly a decade-long hiatus. From 1986 to 2008, he served as professor and chairman of the department of family and community health at Marshall, as well as associate dean for clinical affairs, director of clinical affairs for the Robert C. Byrd Center for Rural Health and executive vice dean. Since 2008, Walker has served as vice chancellor for health sciences at the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission. Walker is also a trustee of the Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation and the Family Medicine Foundation of West Virginia. Over the years, Walker has also served as medical director/advisor for a number of primary care practices in our region. He is board certified in geriatrics, family medicine and preventive medicine.

Michael L. Grome, PA-C
Geriatrics

Grome is a physician assistant with more than 30 years of experience in geriatric patient care. He has a bachelor’s degree in chemical science from Xavier University in Cincinnati and earned his physician assistant degree from Kettering College in Kettering, Ohio. In addition to caring for aging adults, Grome is passionate about access to care in rural areas. He is licensed by the West Virginia Board of Medicine and certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.

Ryan W. Anderson, MS, PA-C

Anderson is a certified physician assistant with Marshall Internal Medicine. He earned a master’s degree in medical science from Mountain State University. Anderson comes to Marshall Health with more than 12 years of experience as a physician assistant, most recently working in an internal medicine practice at Montgomery General Hospital in Montgomery, West Virginia.

Tracy Hawthorne, RD, LD, CDE
Diabetes Education
 

Hawthorne is the diabetes education program coordinator for the Bruce Chertow Diabetes Center. A Hurricane, West Virginia, native, she has been practicing as a registered dietitian in the Tri-State area since 1995. Hawthorne has worked as a dietitian with various health care organizations in the region, including HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital, King’s Daughters Medical Center and Cabell Huntington Hospital. She also worked as a dietitian/diabetes educator with the Chertow Diabetes Center from 2007 to 2013. Most recently, she served as a diabetes educator for Novo Nordisk Inc.

Chris Kennedy, PA-C

Kennedy is a certified physician assistant with Marshall Internal Medicine. He has a bachelor’s degree in psychology from West Virginia University in Morgantown, West Virginia, a bachelor’s degree in physician assistant from James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia, and a master’s degree in clinical psychology from Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina.  He most recently worked with Genesis Healthcare in Teays Valley and has several years of family practice experience.

Bisher O. Mustafa, MD
General Internal Medicine, Vascular Medicine

Mustafa, a board-certified, fellowship-trained physician, specializes in primary care, vascular medicine and weight management. Mustafa has served as the vice president of medical staff, head of the department of internal medicine and interim chief of medical staff at East Kootenay Regional Hospital in Cranbrook, British Columbia. He most recently worked as the internal medicine residency program director and senior consultant in internal medicine at Sheikh Khalifa Medical City in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

Neuroscience

Nicolas Phan, MD
Neurosurgery

Phan, a board-certified, fellowship-trained neurosurgeon, specializes in neurotrauma, including traumatic brain injury, decompressive cranial surgery and spinal cord injuries; degenerative spine surgery, including minimally-invasive spine surgery; and neuro-oncology, including brain tumors, meningiomas and spine oncology. A practicing neurosurgeon with nearly two decades of experience, Phan most recently served as assistant professor of neurosurgery at the University of Toronto/Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto, Ontario. Phan received his medical degree from McGill University in Montreal, Québec. He completed a neurosurgery residency and a neurotrauma fellowship at the University of Toronto, followed by a neurosurgery/neurotrauma fellowship at the University of San Francisco in San Francisco, California. Phan is certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgeons.

Kelly Cummings, M.D.
Maternal-Fetal Medicine

Cummings, a board-certified maternal-fetal medicine specialist, specializes in high-risk pregnancies, including cases of preterm labor, placenta previa, miscarriage risk, multiple births, preeclampsia and gestational diabetes. She earned her medical degree from Marshall University, where she also completed an obstetrics and gynecology residency. She then completed a fellowship in maternal-fetal medicine at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock, Arkansas. She is certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Ally Roy, M.D.

Roy is a general obstetrician-gynecologist who also specializes in minimally invasive robotic surgery. A Cabell County native, Roy earned her medical degree from Marshall University. She served as chief resident during her obstetrics and gynecology residency at Marshall.

Christopher H. McKeand, MD
General Pediatrics

For the past 13 years, McKeand has worked as a pediatrician in Immediate Care at Cabell Huntington Hospital. He earned his medical degree from the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine, where he also completed his pediatric residency. He exclusively sees walk-in patients at our Pediatric Nowcare clinic at 5170 U.S. Route 60 in Huntington.


Susanna A. Kapourales, MD
General Pediatrics

Kapourales is a board-certified pediatrician who earned her Doctor of Medicine from the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine. She completed her pediatric residency at the University of Florida at Orlando Health/Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children in Orlando, Florida. Prior to joining Marshall Health, Kapourales worked at South Charleston Pediatrics in South Charleston, West Virginia. She is a board member for the Childhood Language Center and a member of the Junior League of Charleston. She is certified by the American Board of Pediatrics.

Trish McCarty
Aesthetician

A licensed aesthetician, McCarty specializes in a variety of spa services, including dermaplaning, chemical peels, facials, laser treatments and more. A native of Ironton, McCarty has an Associate of Applied Science from Ohio University and became a licensed managing aesthetician through The Spa School in Columbus, Ohio.
