Joint Replacement

Total and partial joint replacement, or joint arthoplasty, is commonly done on hips and knees but may also be performed on ankles, elbows and shoulders. Joint replacement is only considered after other treatment methods to relieve pain and improve mobility prove ineffective.

During a joint replacement, an arthritic or damaged joint is removed and replaced with an artificial joint called a prosthesis. An artificial joint can help improve movement as well as your overall quality of life. If you are experiencing any of these symptom, you may want to consider joint replacement:

  • Severe pain during activity, such as walking or getting up from a chair
  • Pain that prevents activities
  • Pain at night that hinders sleeping
  • Moderate to severe arthritis

We use one of the following robotic technologies joint replacement surgery:

  • Smith+Nephew CORI surgical system - available at Cabell Huntington Hospital and Three Gables Surgery Center
    • Partial Knee Replacement
    • Total Knee Replacement
    • Revision Knee Replacement
    • Total Hip Replacement. 

Same-Day Outpatient Joint Replacement

Some patients may be eligible for same-day outpatient joint replacement surgery. The ideal candidate:

  • Has limited medical problems
  • Is highly motivated
  • Has good family support to help them at home
  • Lives within two hours of the hospital or surgery center
  • Has open communication with the surgeon

This type of surgery is made possible through improved surgical technique, better pain control and thorough patient instruction. Studies have reported no additional risk of complications between the patient who recovers at home or in the hospital after a joint replacement. It is available at both Cabell Huntington Hospital and Three Gables Surgery Center.
